A few words on our revamped awards

    Share

As you may have noticed from the ski and boot sections, we have changed the way our awards are assigned.

A big change  after years using the same system, where we chose the  Product of the Year followed by ‘Selections’—the products  that were shortlisted, but not picked. A little like the Oscar nominations. From this season  we have decided to keep the Product of the Year and add three Choice Awards, formerly known as Selections, but now with a more defined scope. This is not an insignificant detail, as it leads us to make different choices than we would have in the past.

    Product of the Year

This is, in our opinion, the best ski or boot in its class. Please note: best doesn’t mean that the others are necessarily worse, but that we think it hits the mark for its particular category, offering performance that works for everyone, everywhere, or thereabouts.

    Pro’s Choice

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. In other words: skis and boots for expert skiers looking for  equipment that requires strength and skill to flex and responds to the right commands. For the select few. They’re the best of the best, but can do more harm than good if you don’t have the skill to use them.

    People’s Choice

Unlike the Pro’s choice they have more mass market appeal: easy to use, reliable, and fun—  without gym-honed muscles or ski instructor technique. They’ll get you out of any situation.

    Smart Choice

Put it this way: this is our editor’s pick, equipment that we like even if it isn’t the most universal or technical. It might be skis and boots for specific use, or excellent value for money, or a smart choice  for a number of reasons, even if soon to be retired.
